Youth dies in fresh police firing in Thoothukudi


In a fresh police firing in the port town of Thoothukudi in south Tamil Nadu, a youth, Kaliappan, was killed on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, 10 persons, including a 17-year-old girl, were killed in police firing when a massive rally taken out in the city demanding the closure of Sterlite Copper, a Vedanta group copper smelter unit, turned violent.On Wednesday, police said, a mob pelting stones on 6th Street in Anna Nagar was chased away by a police team. However, when the mob intensified its attack on the police personnel, they opened fire. Four of the protesters sustained bullet injuries. Kaliappan was taken to the Government Hospital, where he was declared ”brought dead”. The injured are being treated there.
Police vehicles set ablaze
Earlier, a mob set fire to two police buses at Bryant Nagar.
While the managed to save one of them, the other vehicle was completely gutted.
Ten persons, including a woman and girl, were killed in the police firing at the Collectorate on Tuesday.
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam working president M.K. Stalin, Congress State president S. Thirunavukarasar, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Vaiko, Viduthalai Siruthaigal Katchi founder Thol. Earlier on Wednesday, Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary K. Balakrishnan and his party cadre, who began a relay hunger strike demanding the closure of the Sterlite plant at Chidambaram Nagar were arrested.
