IISc, JNU and BHU in India’s Ivy League

In a sector that has witnessed a lot of churn of late, including student unrest, the roster of excellence continues to remain stolidly predictable, with the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) India Rankings 2018 throwing no surprises.The third edition of the NIRF Rankings, released by the Ministry of Human Resource Development on Tuesday, included overall rankings across disciplines and as well as category-wise ranking for engineering, pharmacy, medical, management, architecture, law, university and colleges.
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, retained its position as India’s top-ranked university for the third year in a row. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was ranked second, followed by Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in the third place.
Overall toppers
The top 10 in the ‘overall’ category (which considers all higher educational institutions irrespective of discipline) again had the IISc at the top and included six Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), with JNU in the sixth place and Anna University, Chennai, ranked tenth. IIT-Madras was first among the engineering colleges, IIM-Ahmedabad the best management school. AIIMS-Delhi topped among medical institutions. The Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI), Chandigarh, stood second among medical colleges, and Christian Medical College, Vellore, was placed third. The National Law School of India University, Bengaluru, topped among law colleges.
Among colleges, Delhi’s Miranda House stood first, while St Stephen’s College, Hindu College, and Sri Ram College of Commerce were the other Delhi institutions to figure in the top ten, ranked second, fourth and seventh, respectively.
Bishop Heber College, Tiruchi, and Presidency College, Loyola College and Madras Christian College, Chennai, were the Tamil Nadu colleges in the top 10. The NIRF rankings assess institutions on five parameters: teaching, learning and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcome; outreach and inclusivity; and perception.
